Dancing With the Stars premiered last night with Tyra Banks taking the helm as the new host, and it was a delightful Monday-night mess. When the lights when on and the show began, Tyra strutted out in a stunning red gown before changing into a suit for the rest of the night. From there, stars like Nelly, Skai Jackson, Kaitlyn Bristowe, Monica Aldama, and Carole Baskin danced the night away.
In a surprise virtual appearance, longtime judge Len Goodman made Tyra tear up when he told her that he thought she earned a “10” for her hosting. That said, fans were way more divided about the new direction the show is headed without Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews.
The good news is that the America’s Next Top Model and America’s Got Talent host absolutely handled the awkward moments, like her earring malfunction and when Carole didn’t respond to her question at all, as an experienced TV vet would.
TYRA: Carole did you tap into your inner tiger
Carole: 👁👄👁

I need to understand what happened at the end there when Tyra Banks asked Carole Baskin if she was channeling her inner tiger. #DWTS
#DWTS why did Carole Baskin ignore Tyra’s question at the end ?? weird
I am so thrilled that DWTS is back in spite of the pandemic. I think Tyra Banks was adorable, Bruno looks great with the silver hair. Derek Hough is still a cutie and Carrie Ann looked pretty. I’ll be sending in my votes throughout! Love to all♥️
You know I am a #DWTS fan. Tyra Banks did great but miss Tom & Erin! Justina Machado is my pick this season. Charles Oakley feel bad for him. NBA players never seem to do well for some reason when compared those from NFL, and Carole Baskins What the Hell??
Tyra Banks is a good host, so they made no mistake here. If anything, the show is more like its old self than it even was recently. That includes the cover singers covering classic songs in ways that let you know they’re cover singers. #DWTS https://t.co/GudeflYBdh
But some fans just couldn’t get over her jokes or the thought of having one host.
Happy to have #DWTS back! Missing #TomBergeron .. Bring back Tom and have a Tom and #TyraBanks duet. The one host is not working for me.
I am not enjoying at all Tyra Banks as the host. She is trying too hard to be funny and it’s not working. #DWTS29
And others thought Tyra made the night all about herself with her outfit choices.
At least Tyra isn’t making it all about her #dwts pic.twitter.com/8RRgcEMUiL
But, like, it’s hard to blame her for wanting to celebrate landing a major hosting gig after a decades-long career of hard work and experience that led up to this moment!
In a recap of the episode, Cinemablend wrote that at times, Tyra “felt like a guest host who knew how to handle herself with a microphone in front of a camera, but wasn’t quite a Dancing with the Stars expert with the level of banter and familiarity that Tom Bergeron brought to the stage on a weekly basis.”
Of course, Tyra still deserves time to get her footing! And as rocky as the first episode may have been, Tyra worked with what she had—fake audience, pre-recorded cheering, and all.
