Madison Beer as marked being one year free of self harm.
The 21-year-old celebrated the milestone on Wednesday, as she revealed that nobody around her knew she was struggling with self harm, as she ‘hid my pain from the world’.
The Good In Goodbye singer shared a picture of her phone calendar marked ‘one year’, and shared a trigger warning for self harm.
Madison wrote: ‘As of today… I am officially one year clean of self harm. I never thought I’d be able to say this & I am so proud of myself. It has been an uphill battle, so whether you might b one day, one week, one month, or one year clean – I’m so proud of you.’
The singer then shared a picture of a bouquet of flowers, plus a note from her friend Lena Fultz, which read: ‘A year today. Proud of everything you do but this one’s especially important to me. You being here means so much to me. Can’t even put it into words. On your side always LB. Through everything. No matter what.’
Beer wrote: ‘Don’t even have the words to describe how grateful I am for this one. @lenafultz you have been my guardian angel and a light in he dark. I am so lucky to have found you… Thank u for always hearing me, seeing me and loving me, exactly how I am.’
The popstar urged her followers to reach out to friends they thought might be struggling.
She wrote: ‘I’d also like to add… no one around me rlly knew I was struggling when I was. I hid not only my self harm, but my pain from the world. Please please please do not ignore the signs if you think someone you know might be struggling. Reach out to your friends. U truly never know what goes on behind closed doors.
‘If you are struggling at all, please please know it does get better and you are so valid and worthy of love and I believe in you.’
Madison has been in the entertainment industry since she was 13, at which age she was discovered when Justin Bieber shared a cover she performed of Etta James’s At Last.
While she released numerous singles, collaborations and an EP, she is set to release her debut album Life Support this year, and the star has confirmed that the record was inspired by her borderline personality disorder diagnosis in 2019.
Speaking to NME, Madison said: ‘I had been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, I was in and out of dark mental states and in therapy three times a week. ‘I was in a dark f***ing place and I genuinely wanted to die.
‘My team around me was super supportive, I would sometimes go in the studio, we’d be in there for eight or nine hours and I would just be crying, ranting or raving about how I’ve never been this depressed and I don’t know what to do.’
Beer said she believed her mental health struggle and her album were ‘intertwined for a reason’, and that it was her ‘life support’.
