Diabetes type 2 warning – what does your poo look like? Hidden signs in the toilet

Diabetes is a common condition that affects more than four million people in the UK, and 90 percent of all cases are caused by type 2 diabetes. You could be at risk of high blood sugar if you develop looser stools, it’s been claimed.

Type 2 diabetes could be caused by the body not producing enough of the hormone insulin, or the body not reacting to insulin.

Without enough of the hormone, the body struggles to convert sugar in the blood into usable energy.

It’s crucial that if you think you may have diabetes, you speak to a doctor as soon as possible.

You could be at risk of diabetes if you develop unexplained diarrhoea.

Around a quarter of all diabetes patients develop frequent diarrhoea.

It’s not 100 percent clear why that’s the case. But, it’s believed to be caused by nerve damage.

High blood sugar levels may damage the nerve fibres in the body.

You should speak to a doctor if your diarrhoea lasts longer than three weeks.

“People with either form of diabetes experience many of the same symptoms and complications. One such complication is diarrhoea,” said medical website Healthline.

“People with diabetes may often need to pass a significant amount of loose stool at night. Being unable to control a bowel movement, or having incontinence, is also common in people who have diabetes.

“You should see your doctor if you’re experiencing frequent diarrhoea. They’ll look at your health profile and assess your blood sugar levels.

“Because neuropathy is thought to link diabetes and diarrhoea, preventing your chance of neuropathy may reduce your likelihood of persistent diarrhoea.”

But, just because you have diarrhoea, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have diabetes.

Diarrhoea is very common in both adults and children, and it’s usually caused by a stomach bug.

Food poisoning and gastroenteritis are the most common reasons for diarrhoea.

You can usually treat diarrhoea at home with over-the-counter medication.

Many people may have diabetes without even knowing it, because the signs and symptoms don’t necessarily make you feel unwell.

Common diabetes symptoms include having cuts or wounds that take longer to heal, having an unquenchable thirst, and passing more urine than normal.

You should speak to a doctor if you’re worried about the warning signs or symptoms of diabetes, or if you think you may be at risk.

Diagnosing the condition early is very important, because patients are more at risk of some deadly complications, including heart disease and strokes.
