Gmail on iPhone is finally getting the new look we’ve been waiting for

It’s been a long time coming, but Google Gmail users can now finally check their latest messages in dark mode. This new colour scheme arrived on Apple’s iPhone last year with the launch of iOS 13 back in September. However, developers had to adjust their apps to take full advantage of the upgrade – something that’s taken Google a lot longer than some might have hoped.

Although the wait has been arduous, updating the Gmail app on your iPhone or iPad will grant you full access to the stunning new mode with Google’s latest app update stating, “You can now switch between dark or light themes after upgrading to iOS 13. Or you can use the default system theme.”

Along with being a little easier on the eyes when checking emails late at night, there’s another reason why switching on dark mode could be a good idea: it can help to save a bit of battery life. If you have a smartphone with an OLED screen, like iPhone XS or iPhone 11 Pro, you may find that moving from light to dark mode and updated iOS apps, like the latest version Gmail, will save you some battery life and leave you with more time between recharges.

This is due to the way that OLED panels works, which doesn’t require any power to display jet-black black colours. LED panels, like those used on the more affordable iPhone 11, still use battery power to display blacks, so there won’t be any battery-boosting benefit to be seen there.

Along with that important iPhone dark mode update, there’s also more features coming to Gmail when you access the service from your PC.

Google has revealed a huge upgrade is being pushed out across the world which will make it much easier to change the look of the service. When users now click on the Settings icon, instead of the usual list of options, they’ll now get instant access to a bunch of options aimed at helping change the style of their inbox.

Explaining more, Google revealed: “When you click on Settings, you’ll now see different interfaces, inbox types, and display options alongside your real inbox. When an option is selected, the inbox will immediately update so you can compare choices and see how settings work in real time.

“The full settings menu is still available by clicking the “See all settings” button at the top of the new quick settings menu.”

If you use Gmail, here’s everything included in the new quick settings menu –

• Customising the density of text and information displayed

• Choosing a different inbox type to help prioritise and organise emails

• Adding reading panes to quickly see email contents

• Applying themes to personalise the look and feel of your inbox

Google says that this upgrade will be on by default with the firm starts to roll things out from May 26 although some users may not begin to see the changes until later in June.
