Who is Osferth?

Osferth is one of Uhtred’s three best friends in the series, alongside Irish fighter Finan (Mark Rowley) and the brave Sihtric (Arnas Fedaravicius).

He is first introduced in the second season when Uhtred spots him as a novice monk, and Osferth says he does not want to be part of the church.

Uhtred took him into his service, but did not think much of his ability as a fighter as he admitted he had no experience.

Throughout the series Osferth starts to prove himself as a brave fighter, and in the books he manages to take down the Viking warlord Sigefrid (Björn Bengtsson).

Uhtred has a new-found respect for Osferth and the pair develop a strong friendship, with Osferth remaining loyal to him.

In season four Osferth joins Uhtred on his quest to claim back Bebbanburg, and is caught up in the carnage when Uhtred finds his cousin has also returned.

His cousin ends up shooting an arrow which kills Father Beocca (Ian Hart) who dives in the firing line in order to save Uhtred’s son, young Uhtred (Finn Elliot).

Osferth and the rest of the group try to fight but have no choice but to retreat and leave Beocca at Bebbanburg with the enemies.

Later on, Osferth joins Uhtred and his children, and their new ally Eadith (Stefanie Martini) on a trip to meet Uhtred’s lover Aethelflaed (Millie Brady).

He stays behind with Eadith and helps her look after Aethelflaed’s daughter, who has fallen sick with a highly contagious disease.

Uhtred and the rest of his friends tent to make fun of Osferth, but deep down they have a strong friendship and Osferth often initiates the jokes.

They often use him as bait when it comes to missions, and they mock his virginity in front of him.

Despite their jokes, the friends all look out for each other and Osferth has become a fan-favourite for his kind heart and sense of humour.

Fans have taken to social media to praise actor Mitchell for his portrayal of the monk-turned-warrior.

One fan said on Twitter: “Literally love Osferth so much. Will I ever be over The Last Kingdom?”. Another fan commented on how Osferth and Finan have “the purest friendship”.

One part of Osferth’s history which does not feature in the series is the fact he jumps from the top of a gate and killed Sigefrid in battle.

Osferth, who is the illegitimate son of King Alfred (David Dawson), had previously paralysed the Dane warrior after stabbing him in the spine with a sword.

So fans are hoping Osferth proves himself to be even more of a fighter in a new season of The Last Kingdom, as they are keen to see his true colours.

Nonetheless, they have still fallen in love with his character and Uhtred shows him respect, listening to his advice and referring to him as a valued member of the team.
