Airlines

THOUSANDS have complained of airlines flouting the law by refusing refunds on cancelled flights and holidays.Under EU law, cash refunds should be paid within a week for flights and 14 days for package deals.

But airlines including British Airways, easyJet, Virgin Atlantic, TUI and Ryanair have been accused of pushing customers to accept credit vouchers. BA sparked fury when it removed the refund option from its website, while retaining the one for a credit note.

Photographer Louise Dunsire, 51, from Islington, north London, had to fight to get a £1,200 refund on four return BA flights to Morocco. She said she felt “shoehorned” into taking a voucher but the family later got their refund after Sun Money intervened.

FIGHT IT: Some airlines are members of adjudication schemes, which may be able to help. Try the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to find the right scheme, or the CAA itself for complaints about Ryanair and Jet2.
