Well, folks, the imaginative parents of the world (or apparently, in these recent cases, just the imaginative parents of India) have done it again: Just weeks after a particularly, um, creative couple named their newborn twins Covid and Corona, another pair of new parents have welcomed their baby Sanitiser.
Yep, you read that right.
The little guy was born this week in Uttar Pradesh. “Everyone is fighting against this virus, from our prime minister to ordinary people,” the baby’s father, Omveer Singh, told local publication Deccan Herald. “[Sanitiser] is our contribution,” he added, explaining that “Sanitiser is one of the best ways to protect oneself against contracting Coronavirus infection… We will remember this period whenever [we] utter his name.” You can say that again, Singh.
Singh also told India Today Television that he and his wife, Sanitiser’s mom, “are highly impressed by the effective measures taken by both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to battle the novel coronavirus.” Glad at least one world leader is impressing his constituents with “effective measures” against the virus…but I digress.
“We have named our baby ‘Sanitiser’ because it is being used by everyone at present to deter the spread of germs on our hands,” Singh added.
Sounds like Singh was in a similar mindset as Preeti Verma, the mom who named her twins Covid and Corona in March. Verma told Press Trust of India that “indeed the virus is dangerous and life-threatening but its outbreak made people focus on sanitation, hygiene and inculcate other good habits. Thus, we thought about these names. When the hospital staff also started calling the babies as Corona and Covid, we finally decided to name them after the pandemic.” Although you’ve got to raise an eyebrow at naming your sweet kiddos after a disease that’s killing millions. Ah well.
At the very least (unlike the parents of Corona and Covid) Singh and his wife are memorializing the unusual circumstances of their baby’s birth with a vaguely positive moniker — hand sanitizer does fight the virus, after all (as long as it’s not DIY). I’d rather grow up as little Sani than little Covid any day, IMHO.
