Strictly bosses make Mark Lawrenson top target as talks open with footie pundit

Football pundit Mark Lawrenson is in talks to sign up for Strictly.

Bosses on the smash BBC show have made him their top target for the next series.

An insider said: “The team who book celebs for Strictly are really keen to get Mark on board.

“He’s a great character and they know viewers would love to see him on the show this autumn.

“Strictly is a big commitment. But it’s looking promising.”

Producers plan to offer Lawrenson, 62, a big-money deal to get him on board.

He has told pals he is likely to sign on the dotted line.

A source close to the former Liverpool player said: “There is definitely a good chance of him signing up. He has certainly shown interest.

“He loves the show and knows it would be a lot of fun to be a contestant.”

Lawrenson is a household name as a football commentator on shows including Match Of The Day.

But signing up for Strictly would see his profile skyrocket.

An industry source said: “Sporting legends often find Strictly brings them a new fanbase. It would be great for his TV career.”

Bosses have approached a string of stars ahead of the new series, which is due to kick off in September.

But signing up for Strictly would see his profile skyrocket even further.

Others rumoured to be taking part in the show include singer Jane McDonald, newsreader Huw Edwards and actress
Alex Kingston.
