This is our clearest look at the next entry in the next OnePlus flagship smartphone series – OnePlus 8 5G. The shot of the users manual was shared on SlashLeaks, which is a repository for photos of as-yet unannounced products. Although these aren’t always reliable, this tallies with a number of earlier rumours.
Based on the latest whispers, OnePlus will debut three new handsets as part of its next smartphones refresh. That includes the OnePlus 8 Lite, OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro. The last two will be successors to the OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro, respectively, which launched back in October.
When OnePlus launched its first 5G-enabled smartphone, it created an entirely separate handset – the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G, which had an entirely different layout for its internals to accommodate the chunkier 5G modem. Based on the latest leak, it seems like 5G will be coming to more handsets in the range. It could become standard …rather than being the unique selling point of a dedicated 5G-enabled smartphone.
If the rumours are correct and there is a standard non-Pro OnePlus 8 and a OnePlus 8 Pro – it would be weird for the former to be the only model to get 5G capabilities. As such, it seems highly likely we’ll get a 5G-enabled OnePlus 8 Pro too.

That would bring OnePlus in line with other Android manufacturers, like Samsung, which now include 5G connectivity as standard on every handset in their flagship range. With the likes of Three, Vodafone and Tesco Mobile all offering 5G to customers at no extra cost – the super-fast network, which promises to keep your smartphone running with fibre broadband-like speeds even in crowded areas – like football stadiums and train stations during rush hour, offering as many different variations of 5G-enabled phones at different price points makes sense for OnePlus.
Elsewhere, the leaked user manual also seems to confirm earlier rumours that OnePlus will ditch the mechanised pop-up drawer for the selfie camera in favour of a cut-out in the OLED display. Although this means you’ll have to put up with a small circular hole in the middle of any video watched in landscape, at least you won’t have to wait for the camera to whirr out of the chassis of the phone each time you use the Face Unlock system or try to snap a selfie.

According to the crack team at TechRadar, we can expect to see OnePlus co-founder Pete Lau take to the stage in the second week of April. According to a source speaking to the publication, this will be a global announcement – unlike the OnePlus 7T launch which took place in India weeks before its European debut.
All three OnePlus handsets will purportedly sport a high refresh-rate display – ranging from 90Hz on the lower-end models, to 120Hz on their costliest counterparts.
Despite years of pushing back against pressure to pay for an official IP certification for water and dust resistance, OnePlus looks set to secure an official certification for its smartphones for the first time. OnePlus is also seemingly adding Qi wireless charging to its new handsets.
