Samsung announced its latest flagship smartphones series at a glitzy hardware event in San Francisco, California earlier this week. The South Korean firm took the wraps off successors to the best-selling Galaxy S10, dubbed Galaxy S20, as well as refreshed Galaxy Buds wireless earbuds with vastly-better battery life, and a second-generation folding phone, the Z Flip.
But one thing the company didn’t reveal on-stage was its brand-new Galaxy S20 model designed specifically for the Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer. The limited-edition model is only available for the Galaxy S20+ model, which has a larger 6.7-inch Quad HD+ display as well as a depth-sensing camera to allow users to shoot videos with artificial bokeh-style blur behind the subject, like the Live Focus stills you’ve been able to shoot on Galaxy flagships for some years.
The Olympic Games Athlete Edition Galaxy S20+, as it’s aptly branded, is only available in the Mirror Gold finish. Whereas the standard non-Olympian model you will be able to find on store shelves across the country ships in Cosmic Grey, Cloud Blue, and Cloud Pink.
What those standard models don’t have are the Olympic rings emblazoned along the bottom of the rear case.
This isn’t the first time Samsung has created a smartphone to commemorate the Olympic Games. The South Korean company created a special edition Galaxy Note 8 when the Winter Olympic Games took place in its home country. There was also a limited edition Galaxy S7 Edge for the Rio Olympics in 2016, too.
Unfortunately, that handset – like the Galaxy S20+ revealed after the curtain closed on the Galaxy Unpacked showcase this week – are not available to buy in online or brick and mortar stores in the UK, Europe, Asia, or North America.
Nope, Samsung only makes these limited edition sport-focused smartphones available to the athletes taking part in the Olympic Games themselves. So, if you happen to know a world-class athlete, you might be able to try one in the flesh… for the rest of us more accustomed to Netflix boxset marathons than, you know, actual marathons – just enjoy the glossy press images.

Samsung says its engineers rebuilt the entire rear-camera system from the ground-up ahead of the launch. This seemingly drastic step was taken in order to improve photos in tough low-light situations, as well as bring high-quality zoom that combines data from a telephoto lens and its own AI smarts to clean-up any blurring or noise in the image.
Galaxy S20 is available to pre-order now, with Samsung throwing in a £159 pair of Galaxy Buds+ to anyone who orders the Galaxy S20 Ultra.
As well as unleashing its latest and greatest hardware during the latest Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung also used the opportunity to announce price cuts to its Galaxy S10 range. So, if you’re looking to upgrade from an older smartphone, but don’t want to spend a small fortune – this could be a great option.
