It’s the go-to navigational app for many people around the world, and now Google Maps is celebrating its 15th anniversary.
Google Maps first launched in 2005, with the aim of ‘mapping the world’,
Google explained: “Since then we’ve pushed the limits of what a map can do: from helping you easily navigate from point A to B, to helping you explore and get things done in the world.”
One of Google Maps’ most popular features is Street View, which allows you to see panoramic images of different locations.
While most Street View photos simply show buildings and roads, some eagle-eyed users have made it their mission to find weird and wonderful additions to the images.
From frisky cows to ‘ghost’ couples, here’s a round-up of the weirdest things spotted on Google Maps Street View.
Cows getting frisky
Earlier this week, one Reddit user discovered a hilarious photo of two cows getting frisky, snapped by the Google Maps Street View camera.
The image shows a road in Jaintiapur, India, which is lined with busy shops, as well as several people and cars.
However, two cheeky cows have stolen the limelight in the photo, with one cow mounting the other in the middle of the road.
A woman in a rather risqué outfit
Reddit users also spotted a hilarious photo of a woman squatting by the side of the road in Madrid, staring at her phone.
While that alone isn’t that remarkable, her risqué outfit garnered attention on the Reddit thread.
One user wrote: “That is quite the ensemble – the somewhat modest cardigan goes perfectly with the knock-off Calvin Klein knickers and fishnet tights.”
Another added: “It’s so much easier to get into a squatting position when wearing heels. She’s probably been in that position for at least 30 minutes.”
A couple in an intimate embrace – with company
Street View recently snapped a photo of a couple in an intimate embrace at the La Playa Xpu Há Beach Club in Mexico.
While the couple appear to be in a loving embrace on the edge of the water, a third person features in the photo – a photographer.
The woman in the photo is wearing a long white dress, while the man is wearing a suit, suggesting this could be a wedding or engagement photo shoot.
However, one Reddit user joked about the addition of the Google Maps Street View’s camera, writing: “I guess he got an extra angle and didn't even realise it.”
A man passed out in the street
A photo snapped on a street in Ile-de-France revealed a man slightly worse for wear after a night out.
At first glance you may not spot him, as the main focus of the image is a line of cars dotted along the street.
However, on closer inspection, you’ll see the man lying on the ground with his hands over his head, likely having fallen asleep after a night on the town.
Several viewers sympathised with the man, having been in similar situations themselves.
One user wrote: “Oh I’ve definitely been there. He must’ve had a pounding headache when he woke up!”
Another wrote: “Nothing like a full on bender and waking up on a quiet morning trying to recount what took place over the last 24 hours.”
A ‘ghost’ couple
A mysterious ‘ghost’ couple was spotted on Google Maps, wandering the streets of Quebec.
The ‘ghosts’ were seen walking along Rue Saint Jean Baptiste, and appear to have translucent bodies.
The woman is seen wearing a jacket, jeans and sunglasses, and walks alongside a male companion.
Thankfully, there’s an explanation for the ‘ghosts’.
The eerie appearance is due to a photography glitch, which meant that the couple weren’t fully pictured by the Google Maps Car.
Two women brawling
Google’s roaming cameras spotted two women brawling in a street in Russia in 2018.
The unknown women are clearly having a disagreement – one of them in black gym shorts appears to be pulling the other's hair.
Amazingly, the onlookers appear to be just watching rather than attempting to break up the brawl.
It's not known why the fight broke out or whether it was even resolved.
