A man in Hong Kong has died from coronavirus, it was revealed Tuesday, the second person outside of mainland China killed by the virus.
The 39-year-old patient had been suffering from an underlying illness when he contracted coronavirus after visiting Wuhan in January.
The other death reported outside of China was a 44-year-old man who traveled from Wuhan to the Philippines, dying there on Sunday.
As of Tuesday, over 420 people in China have died from the virus, and more than 20,000 have been sickened.
Coronavirus has spread from it’s epicenter in Wuhan to 23 other countries and regions, including the US, Japan and Britain.
News of Hong Kong’s first death came as medical workers entered their second day of protests over the country’s decision to leave open some border crossings with mainland China.
Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam opposed the idea of closing the entire border, calling such a move “discriminatory” and “inappropriate and impractical.”
