Riverdale’s season 4 musical episode revealed – tracking botched transgender operation – The Sun

RIVERDALE fans are in for a treat as show bosses have confirmed that the infamous musical episodes will return for the second half of season four.

And this year Archie and friends will be singing along to Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

The musical turned film explores gender identity as it tells the story of an East German trans woman, Hedwig, whose operation is botched leaving her with a dysfunctional one-inch mound of flesh between her legs.

Hedwig then falls in love and becomes a mentor to a younger man who in turns steals her music and becomes a star, forcing Hedwig and her band – the Angry Inch – to shadow Tommy's tour and attempt a copyright violation.

Series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa admitted they were keen to ensure that any musical they delved into would also fit in to Riverdale's wacky and wonderful ongoing plot lines.

"We thought – is there a way we can do Hedwig and still have it tie into the stories we’re telling?" said Aguirre-Sacasa.

"Doing a deep dive, we figured out a cool way to use classic songs like Wicked Little Town and Midnight Radio that made total sense and are just amazing and iconic," he added.

Riverdale stars KJ Apa, Camila Mendes, Cole Sprouse, and Lili Reinhardt.

The episode synopsis reads: "After the previous debacles of Carrie and Heathers, Kevin Keller has decided to revive Riverdale High’s tradition of hosting a Variety Show!

"But when Mr. Honey forbids him from performing a number from Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Kevin and our gang rallies against their principal—by each performing a number from Hedwig, turning the Variety Show into a full-fledged musical that, as always, reflects our characters’ inner lives and struggles. And amidst all the drama, one forbidden 'showmance' begins to blossom…"

Riverdale has become one of the biggest teen drama programmes, having amassed a global fanbase throughout its three-year run.

The fourth series premiered on Netflix on Thursday, October 10 2019, a day after the show aired on The CW in the USA.
