Huawei P30 Pro could be totally eclipsed by this Android rival next month

The north star of Huawei’s P-series has always been photography. The P20 Pro was the first of its kind to come with three cameras on its rear and a dedicated night mode within its software. Last year’s P30 Pro upped the ante further thanks to a new periscope-style telephoto camera capable of snapping shots with a 5x optical zoom.

The P30 Pro’s camera system remains one of the most diverse of its kind, but that could all be about to change.

Next month Samsung will take to the stage in San Francisco for its scheduled Unpacked event where it’s expected to unveil its shiny new Galaxy S20 series. That’s right, it seems the South Korean firm won’t call its next smartphone the Galaxy S11 after all.

That’s according to a swathe of leaks that have emerged about the new handset in recent weeks, the latest of which has surfaced from teenage leakster Ishan Agarwal that shared an alleged spec sheet of Samsung’s S20 lineup with MySmartPrice

Three models of the Galaxy S20 were detailed in total: the Galaxy S20 5G, Galaxy S20+ 5G and the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G. Rumours have suggested the S20 and S20+ could also come in 4G-only flavours, too.

As the naming conventions suggest, the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G is expected to be the most premium version of Samsung’s new flagship lineup. The hardware is tipped to boast the biggest display, battery and, you guessed it, camera system.

According to Agarwal, the S20 Ultra 5G will come with a quad camera system on its rear comprised of a 108-megapixel primary, 48-megapixel telephoto, 12-megapixel ultra wide-angle and a time-of-flight (ToF) sensor.

That 108-megapixel main snapper could allow the S20 to take photos with ludicrous amounts of detail, even when cropped.

Additionally, the phone is claimed to boast a whopping 10x optical zoom and a mighty 100x digital zoom. If true, that would double its zooming prowess over Huawei’s P30 Pro that comes with a 5x optical zoom and maxes out at a 50x digital zoom.

It seems like the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G will be just as capable when it comes to video. The spec sheet shared by Agarwal claims the phone will be capable of recording pixel-packed 8K footage at up to 30-frames-per-second. That would once again put the South Korean handset miles ahead of the P30 Pro that’s only capable of recording in 4K at up to 30-frames-per-second.

Finally, the S20 Ultra 5G is also tipped to come with a 40-megapixel front-facing camera that may not only be capable of capturing gloriously sharp selfies, but also be able to record in 4K at up to 60-frames-per-second, too.

In comparison, the P30 Pro only totes a 32-megapixel selfie camera capable of capturing 1080p video at 30-frames-per-second.

Assuming the leak from Agarwal is true, it certainly seems like the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G has the P30 Pro beat on paper. But of course, Express.co.uk will have to put the two head-to-head to see which really comes out on top.

And let’s not forget Huawei is expected to release its successor to the P30 Pro in March that’s also rumoured to boast a substantial camera upgrade.
