Musical artist Sting is, understandably, very particular about what he will and will not participate in and offer his name to. He is a worldwide superstar with successes as part of the 1980s band, The Police, and on his own. Part of the reason for that success is his knack for knowing what to throw himself into – and what to stay away from.
He recently put his foot down about the project he simply will not give his permission to. Find out what this is, plus learn more about the remarkable 68-year-old musician’s life.
Sting’s shipyard childhood
Sting was born in Wallsend in northeast England, his home up the street from one of the biggest shipyards in the world. The source of employment for almost the entire town, the shipyard was where Sting was expected to work, but he says it wasn’t what he wanted for himself.
“It was a dark, terrifying place with an awful health and safety record, with terrible chemicals. People got diseases, and industrial accidents occurred. So, I did everything I could not to have that as my destiny,” he told Canadian publication The National in 2014.
The Broadway play based on Sting’s childhood – it’s on tour this year
One project Sting is passionate about is the play he has poured so much of himself into, figuratively and literally, The Last Ship, which opened on Broadway in 2014.
Entertainment Weekly said about the play in its 2014 review, “The biggest selling point of The Last Ship is also its greatest stumbling block: multiple Grammy winner and Tantra enthusiast Sting, who provides the music and lyrics to his first-ever Broadway show. . .Sting’s score remains a burden, anchoring this Ship when it should be making bigger waves.”
The play ended in 2015 after a four-month run on Broadway.
Five years later, Sting has reworked the show and it’s back for a 2020 North American tour. According to Playbill, the show’s first stop, starting this month, is the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, followed by stops in San Francisco, Washington, D.C., St. Paul, and Detroit.
Sting doesn’t want a movie made about his life
Every fan of The Police and of Sting’s solo music will be disappointed to learn that the English artist has no interest in having a film made about his life.
It was fine for Elton John to have Rocketman and for Queen to have made Bohemian Rhapsody, but it’s not for Sting. The Every Breath You Take singer was honest with The Hollywood Reporter this week when he was asked if he would ever consider making that kind of biographical film.
“Absolutely not,” the Roxanne singer said. “I just don’t think I want to. I’m telling my story in an artistic way. [His play, The Last Ship] is a metaphor. This is a story about me. I’m in this play in many ways — probably more than I intended to.”
“But the character I’m playing is built on composites of people like my father, uncles, people I was brought up with.”
“That’s the way I want to do it, rather than somebody going, ‘What’s the arc of Sting’s life?’ I haven’t finished it yet.”
