Alt-pop star Halsey received a wave of backlash after she appeared to speak ill of her American fans.
“You better show me why this is the best place in the world to perform ’cause right now you look like a bunch of f-ing Americans,” Halsey yelled out to the crowd at the Bay Dreams Festival in New Zealand on Thursday, January 2.
Her fans took to social media to express their objection towards what they deemed to be a comment made in distaste towards her home base.
“Imagine going to a music fest to see your favorite artist just to have her get angry and insult not just everyone there but all the american fans she’s ever performed for. @halsey that was pretty s-ty, sis,” wrote one fan.
The singer responded to the comments, writing that it was not intended to come across as “angry or insulting!”
“It’s banter!!!!! the crowd at bay dreams was f-ing epiccccc. one of the best ever,” Halsey continued. “And my american crowds are notoriously mental too…i’d say the same thing to a crowd in, let’s say, scotland. ‘you look like a bunch of englishmen!’ haha.”
Meanwhile, the “Without Me” singer is gearing up to release her third studio album, Manic, on January 17, closely followed by her third performance on “Saturday Night Live” on January 25, which will be hosted by Marriage Story actor Adam Driver.
