Amazing 'reverse microwave' can chill your beer in under a minute

Amazing ‘reverse microwave’ that can chill your beer in under a minute by spinning cold water around it at high speed is unveiled at CES 2020

  • The device can chill a beer or soft drink can in under a minute, developers claim
  • They say it will be able to chill a bottle of white wine to 50F in about five minutes
  • It is currently at the prototype stage but should be available by the end of 2020

An amazing ‘reverse microwave’ that can chill a beer, bottle of wine or soft drink in seconds has been unveiled at CES 2020.

The Juno has been developed by California-based Matrix Industries, which specialises in body heat-powered smartwatches.

The ‘chiller’ uses a thermoelectric cooling engine that spins water around the beverage at high speed, rapidly decreasing the temperature of the can.

As the water is spun around the drink – which doesn’t move – the can is ready to be drunk as soon as it comes out and won’t ‘fizz up’, according to Matrix.

A 12 oz can of beer or soda will chill in about a minute whereas a 25oz bottle of white wine will take up to five minutes

It’s currently at the prototype stage and can only cool one standard soft drink can at a time, but developers hope to have the first commercial versions soon.

Matrix used crowdfunding platform Indiegogo to offer the device for pre-sale, and has made over £100,000 in the first few days since the campaign went live.

Dozens of devices have been sold through the platform, with Matrix suggesting the first could be shipped as early as August if testing goes well.

The crowdfunding campaign is still open for orders, including a distribution tier for more than £7,500 that includes 50 Juno units.

It’s currently at the prototype stage and can only cool one standard soft drinks can at a time, but developers hope to have the first commercial versions soon. The company has also developed beakers for hot drinks to go inside the Juno

Co-founder Akram Boukai said it can ‘rapidly cool your drinks, without the use of noisy compressors or harmful chemical refrigerants.’

‘Both red and white wine should be enjoyed at specific temperatures below room temperature. Juno allows you to chill any type of wine in a matter of minutes.’

It won’t just turn warm drinks cold, Dr Boukai says it can also be used to turn very hot drinks such as tea or coffee into cold versions.

‘What we discovered along the way was that Juno can do so much more than just chill wine’, he said.

‘It can turn your freshly brewed coffee cold, transform your hot tea into iced tea, and cool your favourite beer or soda, right in the can.’

The final boxes will be made from stainless steel and high grade plastics, according to the company.

They will also feature an LED light to let users know when their drink is ready.

Meng He, VP of products for Juno, told the BBC that it could be used to replace mini bars in hotel rooms and is much more energy efficient than a fridge.

She said: ‘This is a result of thermal engineering and material science, it is pure electricity based, there is no environmental harm.

‘Why would you keep drinks in the fridge and use that electricity when you’re not using it. It is energy and space inefficient.’
