Everything We Know So Far About Season Five of 'Lucifer'

You can’t keep a fallen angel down. After being cancelled by Fox and picked up by Netflix, supernatural drama Lucifer was recently renewed for a fifth and final season, and filming is now underway. “We are so incredibly thankful to Netflix for resurrecting our show last season, and now letting us finish the story of Lucifer on our terms,” said show runners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich of the renewal. “Most importantly, we want to thank the fans for their incredible passion and support. The best is yet to come!”

Here’s everything we know so far about Lucifer‘s upcoming final season.

When is the Lucifer Season 5 release date?

No date has been set for season 5 yet (we don’t have a trailer yet, either), although a 2020 release is likely, with all episodes dropping simultaneously on Netflix.

And while fans are already mourning the end of the show, there is a little bit of good news— Netflix has extended the order for Lucifer season 5, and the show’s final season will be 16 episodes, instead of the previously announced 10. We also know that the final season will be released in two separate parts, similar to the final season of fellow Netflix show BoJack Horseman.

“Season five of Lucifer is going to be split into two halves,” Tom Ellis recently said during an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show. “Netflix is going to drop eight episodes, there’s going to be a little break, and then they’re going to drop another eight more episodes.”

Will the main cast be back for season 5?

Tom Ellis, who plays the titular character, will of course be returning. Ellis recently told Men’s Health that he got into the best shape of his life ahead of filming season 4, so we can probably expect Lucifer to be ripped as hell when the show comes back from hiatus. Cast regulars Kevin Alejandro, Lauren German, D.B. Woodside, Scarlett Estevez and Lesley-Ann Brandt are all also coming back.

Filming for the season has recently begun, and Tom Ellis posted a funny behind-the-scenes video from the set. The actor said that filming was “hot in more ways than one.”

It was also recently announced that Dennis Haysbert has been cast in a very important role. Haysbert will play God, and his role will see him spend time with his sons Lucifer and Amenadiel, who are played by Ellis and Woodside, respectively. This also marks the first time that God will appear on the series.

What can we expect from Lucifer‘s final season?

Season 4 ended with Lucifer finally returning to the underworld and picking up his old mantle of King of Hell, although his experiences on Earth have definitely changed him. And while specific story details remain scarce, Lucifer season 5 promises to be wild. “We do have an idea,” Modrovich told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s an idea that when it came up in the room, we went, ‘Oh god, that’s crazy.’ Then the more we talked about it, the more we went, ‘And brilliant.'”

How can we watch season 5?

Season 5 of Lucifer will stream on Netflix, like the fourth season before it, with a run of sixteen episodes.
