After the jam-packed year Marvel gave us with Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home, it’s felt kind of slow ever since. But that’s about to change because 2020 brings about two new Disney+ original series for the franchise: The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision. The latter was bumped up from an original air date of 2021, so that’s very exciting for fans. On top of that, new set photos from WandaVision confirm the appearance of S.W.O.R.D. in the MCU and a bit more about Monica Rambeau.
S.W.O.R.D. is like S.H.I.E.L.D., but in space
While it was mostly speculation before, this new proof of S.W.O.R.D. confirms that the space station the real Nick Fury is on in the end credits of Spider-Man: Far From Home is S.W.O.R.D. It stands for Sentient World Observation and Response Department, and does the same thing for space as S.H.I.E.L.D. does for Earth. But instead of saving humans from bad guys on Earth, it monitors the space.
ScreenRant reported on Dec. 16 that new set photos show the S.W.O.R.D. logo on trucks and a S.W.O.R.D. security officer. To top it off, the adult version of Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), who we saw last as a little girl in Captain Marvel, is seen in a suit and has a badge with the organization’s logo on it. That means little Monica grew up to be a government agent working for S.W.O.R.D.
Fans got a glimpse at S.W.O.R.D. at the end of ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’
Just to get your bearings, S.H.I.E.L.D. is to the Avengers as bread is to butter. The Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division, which is what S.H.I.E.L.D. stands for, has been a part of the MCU since nearly day one. However, it’s been a bit of a bumpy relationship since the Avengers found out that a majority of the federal organization was corrupt and consisted of Nazis.
As stated above, S.W.O.R.D. is all about protecting space and making sure nothing gets past them and disrupts Earth. Yeah, they haven’t really done a bang-up job, but it seems like Nick Fury’s been relaxing. In the comics, Abigail Brand is the leader of this organization, and they play a big part in the Secret Invasion storyline.
Monica Rambeau is involved with the Avengers in the comics, so S.W.O.R.D. makes sense
If you recall from Captain Marvel, Monica wanted to be in on the action with her mother, Maria (Lashana Lynch), and Auntie Carol Danvers (Brie Larson). She was all for her mother going to space to help Carol, even guilted her into doing so. And when they all came home, Monica wanted to fly big space ships one day too. So S.W.O.R.D. seems like the perfect fit for this rambunctious little girl.
Monica’s now an adult and her part with the space department isn’t clear yet. But in the comics, she went into law enforcement and gained superpowers through extradimensional energy that surged in her while on patrol. She was the original Captain Marvel, before Carol Danvers, in the comics, and went on to use the names Spectrum and Pulsar.
So, even though Monica’s arc was changed a bit so that Carol Danvers came first, expect big things from this Rambeau. Not to mention, the connection to S.W.O.R.D. in WandaVision will mean more for the MCU down the line as well.
