A California woman was set ablaze by an exploding vape pen in her backpack, officials said.
The unidentified woman was carrying the vape Tuesday evening at a Rite Aid in Yucaipa when the device exploded, news station KTLA reported.
“We received multiple reports of a female on fire in a local Rite Aid,” Calfire Battalion Chief Josh Janssen told the outlet. “While responding to the incident, we received updated information that the fire was caused by a vape pen that had exploded inside the female’s backpack.”
The woman, who suffered first- and second-degree burns on about 20 percent of her body, was taken to a burn treatment center, officials said.
It was unclear what caused the vaping device to explode.
Photos from the terrifying incident showed the backpack with a hole burned through it, in addition to several pieces of charred clothing, the report said.
