Solar-powered headphones offer 'unlimited' wireless battery life

How do you fancy a pair of wireless headphones you never, ever have to plug in to charge?

That’s the idea behind a new pair of solar-powered cans from audio company JBL. The Reflect Eternal over-ear headphones are currently being crowdfunded by the company with the aim of being launched in October next year.

According to the Indiegogo page, the headphones draw power from both sunlight and artificial light – giving hope to music fans in cloudy Britain. Of course, there is the option to charge up with a wire as a backup.

The company says that just one and half hours outside in sunlight will give the headphones enough juice to run for 68 hours uninterrupted.

Aside from the pretty neat trick of never having to plug them in, the JBL Reflect Eternal seem like pretty conventional headphones. They have 40mm drivers and a dynamic frequency range of 20Hz-20kHz. They’re IPX4 waterproof rated so you could wear them during exercise and not worry about sweat damage.

And because they run through Bluetooth, you could pair them with an Android phone, iPhone, PC or Mac.

Even the cost isn’t too bad. Indiegogo lists the eventual price at £124 although there are various discounts for any backers that want to put in an early-bird offer.

The project has already surpassed its funding goal so there’s a very good chance these headphones will eventually see the light of day. A good thing too, as that’s what you’ll be relying on to keep them powered up.
