SEBASTIAN SHAKESPEARE: The ‘Mystic Marquess’ claims he’s cured himself of cancer with radical starvation diet
The Marquess of Northampton (pictured with wife Tracy Goodman) has claimed to have cured his cancer by shunning western medicine in favour of a self-healing method
He’s been dubbed the Mystic Marquess for his fascination with ancient lore and freemasonry.
Now the six-times-married Marquess of Northampton, one of Britain’s wealthiest and most colourful aristocrats, claims he’s cured his own cancer by shunning Western medicine in favour of a controversial self-healing method.
‘I got cancer last year and healed myself,’ he tells me. ‘I had two tumours in my prostate and I got rid of them by drinking only water — no calories at all — for 24 days. I learned it from a book called The Science And Fine Art Of Fasting. It’s amazing. After three days, you lose your appetite and then you eat all the fat in your body, and then it eats the tumours.’
Spencer Compton, 73, known as ‘Spenny’, admits it took its toll on him physically. ‘I went down from just over 12 stone to about nine-and-a-quarter. I had no fat on me.
‘But you soon put it back on again when you finish the fast. I had no doctors, no nurses, no advice.
‘I just read the book and thought: “This is so right.” ’
He thought The Science And Fine Art Of Fasting was ‘so right’ and to guided his lifestyle change. He said: ‘After three days, you lose your appetite and then you eat all the fat in your body, and then it eats the tumours’
Despite his five divorces, Lord Northampton still has a £120 million fortune. His sixth wife of six years, Tracy Goodman is a glamorous blonde psychotherapist and yoga teacher who is 18 years his junior.
Spenny, whose family owns Castle Ashby House and its surrounding 10,000 acres, is currently refurbishing the Falcon hotel in Castle Ashby which is due to re-open next March.
He claims the stress of the three-year development contributed to his illness. ‘It happened because of the hotel — the stress of doing it.

‘We’re doing every single detail, so it’s been really hard work. I think the cancer also came because of the life I’ve lived. Not only toxins but also stress.’
Since his ‘life-saving’ fast, he relies on a strict regimen. ‘I stick to the ketogenic diet: high fat, low carb — hardly any sugars at all.’
In 1977, Rosie Dawson-Damer became his third wife but the pair divorced in 1983. She is reported to have received a settlement and a trust fund for their daughter in the proceedings
Lord Northampton’s first marriage in 1967 was to Henriette Bentinck. In 1974, he married his former secretary, Annette Smallwood, but they divorced in 1977 .
The woman who was to become his third wife — Rosie Dawson-Damer — was named in that divorce petition, and he married her the same year.
Then came Fritzi (Ellen) Erhardt, ex-wife of Viscount Cowdray, to whom he was married from 1985 to 1988.
He divorced his fifth wife, Pamela Haworth, in 2013 after 23 years of marriage on the grounds of adultery.

Jo swaps the Good Life for Wood family life
Former Rolling Stones wife Jo Wood, who swapped her Camden pad for a farmhouse in Northamptonshire in a bid to get back to nature, was back in the big smoke for her daughter Leah’s art show, The Devil’s Fuge, at the Albiva store in Covent Garden.
Art crowd: Lulu, Sally Wood, Ronnie Wood, Leah Wood and Jo Wood attend a private view of The Devil’s Fuge Christmas pop-up art show in Covent Garden on December 11
‘I spend three days a week in London because my work is here,’ Jo tells me. ‘I come here for all my social events, it’s part of me. I couldn’t give up on London.’ She was joined at the bash by her pal Lulu, Ronnie and his wife, Sally.
Jo is on such good terms with her ex that he’s invited to hers for Christmas day with their grandchildren. ‘Ronnie might well be coming,’ she says.
Womble rubbishes Queen!
The Wombles creator Mike Batt has said Olivia Colman ‘only has one expression – dour’ in The Crown
Olivia Colman has been garlanded with awards, but as the current monarch in Netflix’s The Crown, she fails to win approval from an admirer who could claim to be King of Wimbledon Common — creator of The Wombles pop group, Mike Batt.
‘She’s an absolutely phenomenal actress, with a wonderful range,’ Mike, 70, tells me.
‘But in The Crown it seems she only has one expression — dour — and rarely sparkles like the real Queen.’
Mike adds: ‘None of the cast has got the royal accent right — for instance pronunciation of the vowel sound “ou” as in “round to our house”.
‘Fully paid-up posh people pronounce it almost as “rynde to ire hyce” with a very slight flattening orff.’ Madame Cholet never had these troubles.
Batt said ‘none of the cast has got the royal accent right — for instance pronunciation of the vowel sound “ou” as in “round to our house’ in The Crown. But he did admit Colman ‘is an absolutely phenomenal actress, with a wonderful range’
They don’t make them like that any more.
As the son of a cleaner and a bricklayer, Beauty And The Beast star Luke Evans has risen from humble beginnings to the Hollywood heights.
Actor Luke Evans (pictured left with Stormzy on The Jonathan Ross Show on November 30) has risen from humble beginnings in Wales. He spoke about ‘everyone’ benefitting from his success at the launch of the Tanqueray Townhouse
And the Welsh actor says the best bit about his success is being able to treat his family at home in the Valleys. Speaking at the launch of the Tanqueray Townhouse, he tells me: ‘My parents have never been better dressed. Everybody benefits from my success and that’s because they sacrificed so much to help me. It’s a pleasure to be able to give back.’
Baroness Hale, the first female president of the Supreme Court, whose spider brooch became a TV hit, was a bit of a party girl during her Cambridge student days.
‘I went to lots of parties in town. I did a lot of dancing to The Beatles and the Rolling Stones. But we had to be back at college by midnight.’ One edict the future judge couldn’t strike down.

Former Python Michael Palin led tributes to TV journalist Richard Lindley at his funeral in St Martin-in-the-Fields this week, where mourners included Dame Esther Rantzen and Peter Snow.
‘When he became our neighbour and friend in a close-knit community in NW5, we thought he was a bit of a catch,’ said Palin.
Richard Lindley, 82, had been admitted to the Royal London Hospital in July for a minor procedure to correct a drooping eyelid. But according to his wife, the broadcaster Carole Stone, he came out of the operating theatre a completely different man, and died on November 6. Former Python Michael Palin said he thought Lindlay was a ‘bit of a catch’
‘He became chairman of the residents’ association with an amazing attention to detail.
‘He had the most withering politeness dealing with the council and told us one occasion: “The council has assured me there will be no eruption of sewage during our street party.”
‘And later he managed to persuade Prince Charles to attend an event for local alms-houses. Few people I know have done so much and asked for so little in return.’
Royal bridesmaid ups sticks to brave the ballot
Lady Pamela Hicks, one of the Queen’s two surviving bridesmaids, was among the indomitable oldies who made it to the polling station yesterday despite the wet weather.
So proud was her daughter India Hicks, goddaughter of Prince Charles, that she posted a snap of her mother leaving the Oxfordshire station on two walking sticks.
‘If this ninety-and-a-half-year-old can come out in the wind and rain to cast her vote, there should be few excuses for anyone else,’ said India.
‘This is important.’ Let’s hope Lady P didn’t vote for Corbyn.
