A tech-savvy Catholic priest created a Minecraft server in the Vatican to foster a “less toxic” environment for gamers — but while still in its test phase, the server was quickly sabotaged.
Rev. Robert Ballecer, a software developer from the Silicon Valley, asked his Twitter followers in late August which game he should create a Vatican server for.
Of the four options — Minecraft, Rust, ARK and Team Fortress — the former won out with 64% of the vote.
In an interview with Rome Reports, which was published last week, Ballecer said, “I wanted to offer [a server] in particular that could be less toxic.”
The priest also stressed the importance of the server is for users to “build up a relationship.”
“It’s not about technology. It’s not even about the gaming, it’s about getting people together, who can then maybe move those relationships to the real world,” Ballecer told the outlet.
But two days after that interview was published, problems arose, Ballecer said.
He explained in a tweet that a “handful” of players conspired to “kill the server.”
“I’m looking at the logs of the Minecraft test server and it looks like there is a handful of people who are constantly connecting and disconnecting to fill the player slots and kill the server,” he wrote.
In an earlier tweet, Ballecer noted he was working to address the issue.
“This was a test instance and I didn’t expect it to ramp up like this over just a few hours,” he said.
