Huawei has announced the Sound X – its answer to the Google Home and Amazon Echo. Surprise surprise, the device takes inspiration from Apple. The Sound X looks like a melding of the American tech giant’s “trash can” Mac Pro and HomePod. If the name didn’t already give it away, the Sound X places a huge emphasis on audio quality. In fact, Huawei partnered with French audio firm Devialet to put it together.
Who are Devialet you ask? Well, they’re the company responsible for the iconic Phantom series of speakers that have drivers you can physically see pumping out bass with your very eyes. So yes, it seems Huawei is taking sound seriously with its new device.
The Sound X is packed with a 60 watt double subwoofer and five tweeters that can deliver 360-degree sound. Better still, the hardware is apparently intelligent enough to know when you’ve placed it near a wall and will adjust its output accordingly.
Devialet’s expertise has been leveraged for a feature called speaker active matching (SAM) that should eliminate audio distortion and vibrations emitted from its hefty woofers.
Of course, the Sound X isn’t just about audio quality, it also boasts numerous smart home features too. Chief of which comes in the form of Huawei’s Xiaoyi voice assistant that comes built-in and allows you to bark orders and questions at it.
Huawei claims the device’s six microphones should allow it to pick up even the quietest of sounds within a five metre radius.
You don’t always have to use your voice to control it though, there are also volume controls and a microphone mute switch located at the top of the device.
By far one of the coolest features of the Huawei speaker is the fact it’ll instantly start streaming music being played on a phone if the two touch. That’s certainly a feature we’d like to see on the Google Home, Amazon Echo or Apple’s HomePod.
Huawei’s HiLink system is also embedded into the device, meaning you’ll be able to control other smart home equipment with it.
The most disappointing part of the Huawei Sound X is the fact it’s limited to China for now. The hardware will retail for 1,999 Chinese Yuan which translates to roughly £220.
Of course, Express.co.uk will update you if Huawei ever decides to release the Sound X in other markets.
