Kodi shock as popular TV player hit by tough new streaming shutdown

Kodi users who stream via add-ons are facing another tough new block.

Two of these popular platforms have just been taken offline after legal pressures grew too large for them to continue.

KodiUKTV and OneNation were shut down this month and it appears they will stay offline for good.

In a post on Twitter, the team behind KodiUKTV said: “We took our website offline 10 days ago closed our repo and the builds due to legal demands against us.

“We will say more when we can bring the site back up safely. But the builds & repo will not be back nor will we host any add-ons anymore for anyone.”

The pressure to close their doors has come from FACT who has been behind other high profile closures in recent years

FACT was formed in 1983 to protect the content, product and interests of the film and television broadcasting industries. Its success over the years led to it being regarded as the leader in intellectual property protection.

In a statement issued to TorrentFreak, FACT CEO Kieron Sharp, said: “Our message is clear and consistent; we will act to prevent pirated content appearing on illicit streaming devices. FACT continues to monitor channels used to advertise, market, sell and distribute apps, devices and streams and will take action against the suppliers and operators.

“There is now more choice than ever for consumers to enjoy sports, movies and TV and we encourage people to use legitimate services that are safe to use and also properly remunerate the creators of the content.”

Along with FACT getting tough on add-ons, Kodi has also distanced itself from this way of watching content in recent months.

Kodi is totally legal but it can be adapted, via add-ons, to view premium content without permission – which is clearly illegal.

The Kodi team says that it has been designed to be extendable, with add-ons available through third party repositories as well as from the official sources.

Once the third party capability is enabled (it’s disabled as default) users can install anything they like including services which offer access to illegal content.

“As the name suggests, these third party addons and repos are neither produced by, supported by nor endorsed by Team Kodi,” the post states.

“So is Kodi legal? As we supply it, the answer is yes.

“But as the old saying goes, “it’s not what you have, it’s how you use it”, and in this case also where you got it from.

“If it has been sourced from elsewhere, or if something has been added or modified since it was obtained, then all guarantees are null and void.

“We won’t tell you what to do, not to do or how to use our software. We guarantee the reference Kodi we supply, anything beyond that is up to you.”
