Last night, British teenager Jarvis Kaye hit the headlines after it was revealed that he had been banned from playing Fortnite for cheating.
The teen, known as FaZe Jarvis, broadcast a video of him using ‘aimbots’ – a tactic that is banned on Fortnite – to his two million YouTube subscribers.
Jarvis was immediately banned from the game by its developer, Epic Games, and has since posted a tearful apology, claiming that he ‘wish(ed) he had known how severe the consequences were at the time.’
Now, Jarvis’ mother, Barbara Khattri, has spoken out about his Fortnite ban, claiming that her son is ‘broken.’
Speaking to MailOnline , she said: “Jarvis made an error and he admits that. But the gaming community needs to re-think how it treats people.
“He's broken. He loves that game. He doesn't have a devious bone in his body and what I really know is that for any mistake that doesn't physically harm a person there should be the chance to make amends.”
Ms Khattri also posted on her Facebook page about the incident.
She wrote: “A very wise friend of mine said 'well the thing is you can never be happier than your unhappiest child' – wow, so so true!
“It's my turn at the moment to be feeling that abject pain, despair and helplessness today. My youngest son Jarvis made a genuine, naive error of judgement and is currently banned for life from something he loves.
“It's been a very long, tough week and I've woken this morning with it trending on twitter where there is both overwhelming support and criticism for him.
“As not only a parent and a boss but mostly as just a person, I know first hand how so often the lesson is so much better learned when there is the opportunity to take full responsibility and actually in what ever way fix or right the wrong!
“I pray for Jarvis that this is the case for him. I'm not looking for agreement with my point of view at all, I just thought that there's as much power in sharing when we feel scared and confused as when we're on top of the world.”
Ms Khattri’s comments come shortly after a campaign to reinstate Jarvis on Fortnite was started on Twitter , under the hashtag #FreeJarvis.
One user wrote: “What Fortnite did to jarvis is so bad. He doesn’t deserve that. He’s made such an impact on the fortnite community and for them to just take it all away like that is dumb. He deserves another chance!! #FreeJarvis”
Another added: “Jarvis did a bad decision using aimbot on Fortnite for content on YouTube, but perma ban is not the answer. Jarvis is one of the best Fortnite players and this will completely ruin his Fortnite career. Everybody does mistakes. #freejarvis”
And one wrote: “Yo @FortniteGame unban @liljarviss. guy spent hours of his lifetime into your game and spent thousands of dollars into your game.Jarvis is a really skilled player. He had a lot of potentian, but you banned a successful player FOR LIFE.#FreeJarvis”
However, not everyone is on board with the hashtag, with many praising Epic Games’ decision to ban Jarvis.
One user tweeted: “FaZe Jarvis was cheating/hacking and got perma-banned. What did he expect? “
And one added: “#FreeJarvis Boohoo… Well deserved lifetime ban – people like you have spoiled the game for everyone.”
