The Crown season three introduces a whole new cast to play slightly older versions of the Royal Family. This includes Helena Bonham Carter who will be taking over the role of Princess Margaret from Vanessa Kirby. Ahead of the show launching on November 17, here’s everything that fans need to know about her role in the new season.
Who is Helena Bonham Carter playing in The Crown?
Bonham Carter will play the role of the Queen’s sister Princess Margaret in the new series of The Crown.
Previously portrayed by Vanessa Kirby, the role has been one of the most popular in the show so far and was a stand-out role for the young actor.
The character in the series is based on the real-life sister of Queen Elizabeth II.
So far the series has charted several major events in her life including her love affair with Group Captain Peter Townsend (Ben Miles) and the heartbreak this caused when the pair could not marry.
Towards the end of season two, the beginnings of her romance with photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones (Matthew Goode) was also explored.
The new series of the show will follow the years of their marriage with Armstrong-Jones (Ben Daniels).
Bonham Carter is an Oscar-nominated English actor who is best known for playing another royal role – Queen Elizabeth in The King’s Speech opposite Colin Firth.
She has also appeared in the Harry Potter trilogy as Bellatrix Lestrange as well as a number of films created by her former partner Tim Burton.
In recognition for her acting career, Bonham Carter was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2012.
Speaking ahead of appearing in The Crown, the actor has revealed more about taking on the role.
She spoke at the Cheltenham Literature Festival earlier this month about how daunting she found it to take on the role.
She said: “It’s daunting, definitely daunting. Vanessa has just won a Bafta and she’s brilliant, and in a way you have the ghost of the real Margaret and the ghost of the actress who played her.
“You also have the fact everyone has an opinion about the woman and yet ultimately very few people knew what her private life was like and that’s the sort of the joy of the job.”
She did also revealed what she feels she has learned about the real woman so far in the process of creating her.
She added: “I think Margaret was very much her father’s daughter.
“She had the anxiety he had, and I think a lot of people interpreted her as angry, rude and tough.
“She wasn’t tough at all, and I think she was quite vulnerable and often attack was the best form of defence.”
Joining Bonham Carter in the new season will be Tobias Menzies as Prince Phillip and Olivia Colman as the queen.
The new actors will appear in the third and fourth season of the show on Netflix, which are thought to have been filmed back to back.
Both outings will follow the years of 1964-76, covering the breakdown of the marriage of Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon.
As well as this, there will also be a focus on the early years of Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor) and Camilla Parker-Bowles (Emerald Fennell).
The Crown season 3 returns to Netflix on November 17.
