It’s not something anyone likes to think about but there will come a time when Queen Elizabeth II is longer with us. When that day comes so much will change for many members of the royal family.
Prince Charles will become king and his eldest son, Prince William, will be to first in the line of succession to the British throne. With that, a lot of change will come for William’s wife, Kate Middleton, and their three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
Here’s how Her Majesty’s death will directly impact and change things for the Cambridge family.
What will happen when Queen Elizabeth dies?
Of course, no one knows how they’ll die and the queen is no exception. However, as the Guardian noted, the palace envisions that it will go something like this: Her Majesty will be surrounded by loved ones and pass away after a brief illness. The queen’s senior doctor, gastroenterologist Huw Thomas, will be present that day and will be in charge of who can go into her room at which time and what information should be made public.
Queen Elizabeth has laid out several rules to be carried out after her death from how long she should be mourned to what should be played on public television.
She stated that there will be 12 official days of mourning and during that time the BBC cannot air any comedies or other humorous programs.
Her passing will also trigger major changes for Prince William, his wife, and their kids.
This is what will change for William and Middleton
Once Prince Charles is king, William and Middleton’s titles will change.
They are currently the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge but when William’s father ascends the throne they will adopt Charles and Camilla’s Duke and Duchess of Cornwall titles. William will also likely get his father’s Prince of Wales title at which time Middleton can take the Princess of Wales title like her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana.
Another thing that will change is the pair’s amount of wealth.
As the new Duke of Cornwall, the prince will take over the Duchy of Cornwall. The Duchy encompasses 135,000 acres of land in southern England as well as an investment portfolio. The land estate includes everything from farms to residential and commercial properties to natural resources like forests and coastal areas. It was created in 1337 by Edward III and its purpose is to provide an income for the oldest son of the monarch.
What will change for the duke and duchess’ children?
Also changing when Queen Elizabeth passes away is Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis’ place in the line of succession.
Prince George will move up behind his father to second in line followed by his little sister, Charlotte, who will then be third in line thanks to the Succession to the Crown Act, which amended the system so that males no longer take precedence over their older sisters. Meaning that William and Middleton’s youngest child, Prince Louis, moves from fifth in line to fourth.
Where the royal siblings fall in the line will change again once George has children of his own.
