MICHAEL OWEN claims "mid-table team" Manchester United are the worst they have been "for decades".
Former Old Trafford striker Owen believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's dour side will miss out on a top-six finish – as United have been declining since Alex Ferguson's legendary reign ended six years ago.
Solskjaer invited scorn on his tenth-placed Premier League team by praising Thursday night's abject 0-0 draw at AZ Alkmaar.
And ex-Liverpool hero Owen even claims the Norwegian has "knowingly weakened" United in a long-term plan to eventually get things right.
Owen, who won 89 England caps, told BT Sport: "I don't think they'll be top six this season, personally.
"Top half I think is likely, but just the fact we're having this conversation is the worry, isn't it?
"This has got to be the worst Manchester United team for decades, hasn't it? Since before Sir Alex Ferguson took over.
'TWO STEPS BACK'
"It's been happening for a few years. For maybe five, six, seven, eight years you've been thinking 'it can't get any worse', and it has."
United failed to notch a shot on target for the first time in 25 Europa League games when drawing in Holland.
Yet Solskjaer said: “I am very pleased as it’s a good point away from home against a difficult opponent on a difficult surface.
“They beat Feyenoord 3-0 away from home, and we made many changes. It should have been a win.”
