TOP Boy star Alessandro Babalolo has opened up about the dark side of fame.
The actor, who plays hitman Haze in the third series of the British crime drama, reflected on how a public profile can affect one’s sense of self.
“It’s not hard for me to go outside… actually, I take that back,” he told Standard Online.
“It can be a bit anxiety-inducing if I am frank with you. Only because I am sometimes wary of what the response will be, especially because I played a villain, you know?”
Haze’s signature menacingly deep voice and steely demeanour are a far cry from Alessandro’s nature, testimony to his Olivier award-winning acting.
However, he does fear his evil alter ego could illicit the wrong kind of fan reaction.
“Once I stepped outside of my house and people started yelling out to me,” he went on.
“People’s reactions might not be too pleasant. But I haven’t been affected by that too badly, that was all a bit of paranoia.”
On a happier note, he admitted he was thrilled to see the diversity of the show’s fanbase.
Top Boy originally aired on Channel 4, and ran for two seasons, only to be dropped.
Fortunately, Drake stepped in and saved the show, which is now available to view on streaming giant Netflix.
Elsewhere, fellow cast member Ashley Walters claimed he was forced to live a ‘double life’ before starring on the show.
