iOS 13.1 update arrives days after iOS 13 – here’s why you should download it

Apple has put out an update to its new iPhone operating system less than a week after the iOS 13 software was released.

The iOS 13.1 update includes not only the usual bug fixes and improvements, but several major new features that weren't ready in time for the launch of iOS 13 on September 19.

These include the ability to select who you want to AirDrop to by pointing from one iPhone to another.

This only works on the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, because they include the new U1 chip with Ultra Wideband technology for spatial awareness.

However, other features of the iOS 13.1 software update are available across all iPhones that support iOS 13.

For example, the Shortcuts app, which is now built into iOS, has been updated with suggested automations, which are personalised to your daily routine.

Meanwhile, in the Apple Maps app, you can now send your estimated time of arrival to friends, while your route is in progress.

And battery charging has also been optimised, to slow the rate of battery aging by reducing the time your iPhone spends fully charged.

How to update your iPhone to iOS 13.1

You can check for the update by opening the Settings app and tapping General > Software Update.

If iOS 13.1 is available on your device, you should then see an option to update.

This can take a while, so make sure you don't need to use your phone for anything important before hitting the download button.
