Billie Eilish has had to put up with more than a few comments about her baggy clothes over the years, namely from Internet trolls who think she should show off more of body, and she’s fed up. “‘If only I dressed normal, I’d be so much hotter.’ Yeah, yeah, come up with a better comment. I’m tired of that one,” Billie said in an Instagram post on Monday. In a Calvin Klein ad released in May, the 17-year-old singer revealed that her baggy clothes and unique style are a deliberate choice to avoid being sexualized. “I never want the world to know everything about me,” Billie said.
If you’re a woman in today’s world, chances are you know exactly what it’s like to have others determine your worth based on your body image, and it sucks. It’s a universal experience. As someone who’s struggled with my perception of my own body, I know that hearing others’ opinions of your body can be a real mind game, even more so if you’re frequently in the public eye.
“It makes me mad. I have to wear a big shirt for you not to feel uncomfortable about my boobs,” Billie added in a recent interview with Elle. “I’m gonna be a woman. I wanna show my body. What if I wanna make a video where I wanna look desirable?” Billie said, referring to the fact that she’ll be 18 soon. “I know people will say, ‘I’ve lost all respect for her.'”
“That’s why I wear big, baggy clothes,” Billie added. “Nobody can have an opinion because they haven’t seen what’s underneath. Nobody can be like, ‘She’s slim-thick,’ ‘She’s not slim-thick,’ ‘She’s got a flat ass,’ ‘She’s got a fat ass.’ No one can say any of that because they don’t know.” Billie’s decision to dress in oversize clothing seems like an effective way to avoid the criticism of her body image overshadowing her actual musical talent. In several ways, however, her decision to dress in baggy clothes doesn’t feel like much of a decision at all when the alternative is to have her body scrutinized by the public.
While it’s heartbreaking to know that such a young artist feels the need to hide her body completely to avoid being judged, Billie’s admission in the “I Speak My Truth In #MyCalvins” ad has sparked overwhelming discussion and support among her fans. “When Billie Eilish said, ‘I wear baggy clothes so people don’t have to know what’s underneath, they can’t judge,’ I felt that,” wrote one fan on Twitter.
