Ellen DeGeneres shaved her head after a disastrous dye job

Ellen DeGeneres debuted her natural silver flecked hair color for the first time after a disastrous dye job forced her to shave her head

Bad hair days can happen to anyone.

Ellen DeGeneres kicked off season 17 of her hit show this week and revealed that after a cataclysmic dye job in the spring, she was forced to shave her head when her hair started falling out.

The 61-year-old queen of daytime admitted she had no idea what her natural hair color would be after years of dying it and then revealed a photo of her natural silver flecked hair to the audience.

Yikes: Ellen DeGeneres kicked off season 17 of her hit show this week and revealed that after a cataclysmic dye job in the spring, she was forced to shave her head when her hair started falling out

‘Long story short,’ she told the crowd. ‘My hair was long and then it was short and then it fell out.’

Ellen has rocked a platinum cropped or pixie cut for decades but she recently went shorter than usual after the traumatic salon experience.

‘My hairdresser said I needed to shave it really short so that the color was completely out of it and I would grow new virgin hair,’ the star explained.

Adding: ‘And since I wasn’t working over the summer, that’s what I did.

Surprised! The 61-year-old queen admitted she had no idea what her natural hair color would be after years of dying it and then revealed a photo of her natural silver flecked hair to the audience

‘Long story short,’ she told the crowd before showing her natural hair color. ‘My hair was long and then it was short and then it fell out.’

The star shared a snap of her real, virgin hair which showed the color to be a light brunette, streaked with silver

‘I’d never seen my natural color,’ Ellen revealed. ‘I’d been coloring my hair for so long.’

Neither Ellen and her wife Portia de Rossi, who also had never seen the comedian’s natural hue, love the change of pace.

DeGeneres considered going au naturale until she was talked into going back to blonde by a producer on her hit show.

‘I’d never seen my natural color,’ Ellen revealed. ‘I’d been coloring my hair for so long.’

Despite her hair still being no more than and inch or two, Ellen said that getting back to her signature blonde took five hours.

‘Some punk-a** kid can tag an entire overpass in six minutes and I’m five hours to do this,’ she joked.

Last season Ellen shared her initial story about the bad dye-job which resulted in a long process of corrective color.

Wow! Neither Ellen nor her wife Portia de Rossi knew what the stars natural hair color was but they both loved her natural hue

During her monologue in an episode last season, Ellen explained that she’d wanted to try out a new style and tried a new colorist.

The ill-prepared colorist, who Ellen jokingly compared to clown Ronald McDonald, was unable to create the color the TV host wanted when attempting to dye her hair.

Two-and-a-half hours after the start of her appointment, Ellen was left with a color she did not anticipate.

A process: At the end of last season, Ellen told her audience that she’d suffered the damaging dye job that resulted in her color-free summer

‘I looked at it in the mirror and was like, “This is not good,”‘ she confessed when detailing the experience.

‘So the person said, “Well, let me try it again,” and they tried it again,’ Ellen said.

‘We were running out of time, and they’re like, “It’ll rinse out. Every time you shampoo, it’ll get better.”‘

At this point in the appointment Ellen said the hair was ‘many colors’ that she didn’t even know how to describe it.

Oh no: After her disaster with the new colorist in the spring, Ellen had to get corrective color which ultimately proved too damaging for her short locks

‘I had the pride flag on my head,’ she joked.

Problems continued for the comedian, who realized her hair was starting to fallout due to the damage from the multiple dyeing attempts in the span of a few hours.

‘So my hair was falling out — like, literally, I would touch my hair and hair was falling out,’ she said. ‘I think my hair was so embarrassed, it didn’t want anything to do with my head, and said, “I’m getting out of here.”‘

Fast forward a whole summer, a shaved head, virgin hair and a new dye job and Ellen is back to her old self.
