Employees face sack for bringing in single use plastic coffee cups

One boss was so fed up at seeing bins over-spilling with sandwich wrappers and coffee cups that he plans to make it a disciplinary offence.

Workers are in a six-week consultation to change their contracts, meaning they could face the sack if they wilfully flout new rules.

Crisp packets, sandwich boxes with plastic windows, takeaway coffee cups (which usually contain plastic) and plastic water bottles have all been banned from the office.

The founder of Intelligent Hand Dryers, in Sheffield, admits it did cause a few “screwed-up faces” among his workforce of 10.

One staff member even threatened to eat their crisps in their car.

But now Andrew Cameron, 41, says the staff, who are given free fresh fruit and cakes, are coming round.

He said: “I looked around at work and I could see all the waste.

"Our bins were just over-spilling. I’ve got three young kids and I just thought if we carry on blindly sleepwalking… then we’re all stuffed.”
