This maths equation is dividing the internet squarely in half

What seems like a relatively straightforward mathematical equation is causing all kinds of chaos on the internet.

8 ÷ 2(2+2).

Looks simple, but there are two distinct answers that people can’t decide on.

The puzzle was posted on Twitter this week and has since racked up over 3k retweets and over 12k likes.

But no maths genius appears to have stepped in and given us the proper verdict.

Have a go yourself and see what you come up with.

So, was it 1 or 16? Nobody seems to know because you’ll get a different answer depending on how you learned mathematics.

It comes down to the order in which you make the calculation.

Some places teach the PEMDAS (Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction) while other schools teach the BODMAS (Brackets, Orders, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction) method.

You follow one method, you get one answer. You follow the other one, you get a different answer.

So the answer is technically both 1 AND 16.

Maths, eh?
