Chelsea legend Zola to quit Blues this weekend following Lampard arrival after turning down ambassador role

GIANFRANCO ZOLA will leave Chelsea when his contract expires this weekend.

The Stamford Bridge legend spent the last season serving as one of Maurizio Sarri’s assistants.

However, his deal expires at the end of the month.

And with Sarri ditching the Blues for Juventus, there is no room for Zola in Frank Lampard’s backroom set-up.

The Italian has been offered the chance to stay at Chelsea as a club ambassador.

But Zola is instead set to leave to pursue his own managerial ambitions.

The tactician’s agent revealed: “Gianfranco’s contract with Chelsea expires at the end of the month.

“After a season of hard work and fantastic results alongside Maurizio Sarri, he is ready to take the next step in his own management career.”

Lampard is expected to be announced as Chelsea’s new manager shortly.

And he will bring Jody Morris from Derby to serve as his No 2 in the dug-out.

SunSport also understands that U23 chief Joe Edwards will be promoted to the role of senior coach.

Petr Cech has already returned to the Bridge as technical director.

While there are reported roles in place for Didier Drogba and Claude Makelele.
