  • Beggar James Campbell, 32, is detained after raping 57-year-old woman
  • He attacked her in Glasgow after she stopped to check on him in wet weather
  • Police were called by witness and had to drag him away from the victim
  • Will serve at least three years and cannot be released without medical approval

A beggar who raped a 57-year-old woman after she stopped in the street to offer him help has been jailed indefinitely.

James Campbell, 32, was handed an Order for Lifelong Restriction at Glasgow High Court after admitting the vicious attack on the woman in the Scottish city last August.

It means Campbell, who made up to £100-a-day on the streets, will be locked up for at least three years and will not be released until doctors believe he is no longer a danger to the public.

The court heard Campbell, who lived with his mother in Paisley, Renfrewshire, initially claimed it was consensual ‘rough sex’ but eventually admitted the crime.

He was caught by police near West Nile Street, Glasgow, on August 16 and was physically dragged away from her.

On the day of the attack the victim noticed he was not wearing a top in chilly and wet weather.

She asked him if he was alright and spoke to him for about 10 minutes, only for Campbell to follow her and refuse to go away.

As the woman walked past an alley Campbell demanded a kiss before restraining her and raping her.

Prosecutor Angela Gray said: ‘He told the woman. “I love you. I want you to be my girlfriend,” and she replied: “Don’t be daft. I don’t even know you”.’

The court heard that the woman struggled with Campbell and repeatedly told him: ‘Please don’t’ and ‘There is no need for this’.

Miss Gray added: ‘She repeatedly told him to stop and that he was hurting her. He did not stop and told her to shut up.

‘A solicitor working in an office overlooking the lane saw the incident taking place and phoned the police.’

Campbell had scratch marks on his thighs while the woman sustained bruises to her legs and thighs and was left visibly shaken.

The court heard Campbell regularly begged in Buchanan Street dressed in Celtic football club clothing and draped in an Irish tricolour flag, and could make up to £100 a day.

Sentencing, Judge Lady Stacey told him: ‘I take the view you present a danger to the public.

‘I saw a video of what happened. It was a very serious and violent rape against an older woman who only weighed about six stones.’

She added: ‘In order to protect the public work needs to be done with you.

‘There is no definite time at which you will be released. You will be seen by doctors and psychologists. As to when you are released that decision will not be taken by me, it will be taken by others.’

Defence counsel Laura Reilly said Campbell ‘expressed remorse’ over the attack.

Campbell, who has been in custody since last August has also been placed on the sex offenders’ register.
