Multiple people were rescued from an overturned boat near City Island Sunday evening, officials said.
The vessel flipped over just after 5:30 p.m. in the Long Island Sound and rescue units from the NYPD, Coast Guard and FDNY helped pull at least seven individuals from the water, according to fire officials.
One of the passengers was saved by NYPD divers and a firefighter — later identified as Lawrence Rooney — after getting trapped underneath the boat, the officials said.
“When we arrived on scene, a man was screaming that his wife was underwater and never made it out when the other passengers escaped,” said FDNY Lt. Ilya Zerakhto. “The NYPD members swam under the overturned vessel and confirmed that the individual was conscious, but tangled in fishing gear. As they removed her, Firefighter Rooney grabbed the individual’s shoulder, and we confirmed that the person was still conscious. The person was in hypothermic shock.”
Paramedics medevacked the woman to North Shore University Hospital, where she was expected to survive. The six other passengers were brought ashore and also hospitalized. Their conditions were not immediately known.
The type of boat or how it overturned was not immediately known, either.
