Karamo Brown and Antoni Porowski Had 'Extreme Conflict' During First Season of 'Queer Eye'

“It was hard for maybe five months,” Brown said. “But it was always the question of, ‘Will he betray me again?'”

Karamo Brown and Antoni Porowski might be close friends now, but the "Queer Eye" stars had an "extreme conflict" during the first season of the Netflix series.

The culture expert spoke about why he and Porowski didn’t get along when the show first began on a recent episode of his own podcast, "Karamo."

"One of the reasons that I invited you here and I’m so thankful you are open to coming on this is that you and I had our conflict it was something that the Fab Five knew about, also the crew," Brown told Porowski.

"Someone, a third party, got involved in what we were talking about, with what our issues was and escalated it to a point where we were no longer able to see each other, to communicate," he added.

Although the two didn’t disclose what the issue was or reveal more information about the third party who was involved, Brown said the fight had to do with the topic of betrayal, which brought up old problems both Brown and Porowski had with their families.

"My feelings of betrayal had nothing to do with you," Brown said. "It had to do with feelings of family and people who’ve I’ve loved feeling as if like the shoe’s gonna drop and once I get betrayed either they hurt me or I hurt them. Our conflict triggered that emotion and just like it triggered for you…It stems from my family."

"It was hard for maybe five months," he continued. "But it was always the question of, ‘Will he betray me again?’ and not saying you betrayed me, the feeling of, ‘Will he betray me again?’"

Brown recalled a specific moment during the cast’s Season 1 press tour where he wanted to confide in Porowski but hesitated. "I literally had to fight against [it]," he said. "It’s one of those things of like having to be able to check in with your feelings…as they’re happening and you forget they’re always lingering."

When asked how he felt during their conflict, Porowski said, "I think it was just…and this is something that comes up for me time and again…it’s of not being heard, not being understood, being disrespected."

"Queer Eye," which has won two Emmy awards, recently dropped its third season. Brown stressed the short period of time he and Poroski had beef never impacted the makeover show, which also stars Jonathan Van Ness, Tan France and Bobby Berk.

"Let me be clear about this," Brown said. "No matter what we were going through, our intention on camera was always to help our heroes. I respected this so much about Antoni and I believe he respected this about me because we would be going through something, but once it was about this other person, we put our issues aside and said, ‘Let’s help.’"
