Pixel 3 update – Google phone could be set for a colourful change

Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL released in November last year and were critically acclaimed by media and Android fans, particularly for the software and camera systems on offer.

In fact, Express.co.uk awarded the handsets four out of five stars in our review.

We said: “There’s no question that the Pixel 3 and 3 XL are first-class smartphones.

“These Google-powered devices are fast, feature-packed and offer the ultimate experience for those who want pure Android power.

“If photography is your passion you’ll also struggle to find a phone that can take pictures better than a Pixel.”

While the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are undoubtedly great smartphones, they are priced at a premium with the former having a starting retail price of £739 and the latter £869.

However, it is worth noting several outlets, including Google itself, have slashed the price of the device for extended periods previously.

In fact, the device can currently be picked up for as little as £489 on John Lewis.

But it appears Google is determined to make its Pixel line of devices even more accessible, according to myriad rumours that have stated the American tech powerhouse is working on two new products called the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL.

These smartphones have been tipped to forgo some premium features in exchange for a more appealing price tag.

Russian site Rozetked showed claimed images of the Pixel 3a back in November; the product was displayed with a similar design to the standard Pixel 3 but featured a plastic casing in addition to large bezels above and below its display.

Interestingly, the device was displayed with a headphone jack, a port not present on the more premium Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL.

Notable tipster Evan Blass also recently posted what appeared to be a leaked press shot of the hardware on Twitter.

The photo showed the alleged Pixel 3a with a single camera on its front and back.

While the Pixel 3a has been rumoured to make a number of compromises in terms of its design and internals, it has been claimed the rear camera sensor is the same to that of the regular Pixel 3.

If true, this could provide the budget hardware with a unique selling point when compared to its immediate rivals.

The first claimed image of the Pixel 3a showcased the hardware in a white finish.

However, Blass has since posted another shot of the hardware in a purple colour that, if accurate, could present the Pixel line with a colourful change.

The purple tone was displayed to be incredibly light, similar to the “not pink” variant of the standard Pixel 3.

Keeping with recent Pixel tradition, the lock button of the device was displayed to be a different colour to the rest of the phone’s shell.

In this instance, the hardware was shown with a bright green key.

WinFuture has said the Pixel 3a will come with a 5.6-inch display while the Pixel 3a XL will flaunt a 6-inch panel.

Plus, the German publication has speculated the forthcoming devices could be priced at around €450 (£389.80).

In a teaser page on its online store, Google has suggested new Pixel hardware could be coming on May 7.

It is expected this will be the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL.
