Bode, Morgan Miller Teach Their Son to Swim 10 Months After Daughter Drowned

Next steps. Bode Miller and Morgan Miller (née Beck) are teaching their 6-month-old son, Easton, to swim after their daughter, Emmy, drowned in June 2018.

“I saw 6-month-old babies and 1-year-olds and 16-month-olds, 19-month-olds, swimming — that could’ve been Emmy,” the professional beach volleyball player, 32, said on the Today show on Thursday, April 25. “That should’ve been Emmy. And it was that easy to commit to one session of what we’re doing now. It would’ve changed everything.”

Her husband, 41, added: “Being a parent is inherently scary. You’re worried about your food or your screen time or whatever, but the number one thing that can take your child, where none of that stuff is relevant, is drowning.”

In addition to spreading awareness about pool barriers and kids’ drowning risks, the couple have put Easton in 10-minute water safety lessons every day for a month. In Today‘s footage, Morgan and Bode sat on the side of a pool as an instructor held their baby boy in the water.

“We really need him to know that getting to his back and resting and breathing is where he needs to be to save himself,” the instructor said.

Morgan and the Olympic skier revealed that their 19-month-old daughter, Emmy, had drowned in June 2018.

“We are beyond devastated,” Bode captioned a spread of photos of the toddler at the time. “Our baby girl, Emmy, passed away yesterday. Never in a million years did we think we would experience a pain like this. Her love, her light, her spirit will never be forgotten. Our little girl loved life and lived it to it’s fullest everyday. Our family respectfully requests privacy during this painful time.”

The couple, who wed in 2012, welcomed their son four months later.

“I haven’t formally introduced our little light, Easton Vaughn Rek Miller,” the model wrote on Instagram in February. “He is so special and has brought so much healing and hope.”

She and the Go Fast, Be Good, Have Fun author also share son Nash, 4. Bode welcomed Neesyn, 11, with Chanel Johnson in 2008, followed by Samuel, 6, with Sara McKenna in 2013.
