What happened in Game of Thrones season 5?
GoT series five begins with a flashback showing a young Cersei Lannister (Nell Williams) being told by a witch (Jodhi May) that all of her children would die during her lifetime.
In the present day, Cersei (Lena Headey) has lost one child in the previous season and by the end of season five as Myrcella is poisoned by the leader of the Sand Snakes Ellaria Sand (Indira Varma) in revenge for the death of her lover Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal) while he was in King’s Landing.
In Game of Thrones season five, however, Cersei’s son Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman) is still on the Iron Throne and married to Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer), who Cersei hates.
To rid herself of Margaery and the influence she has over Tommen, Cersei empowers the Faith of the Seven, a puritanical religious sect led by the High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce).
This initially works, as Margaery’s brother Loras Tyrell (Finn Jones) is imprisoned for homosexual acts and his sister ends up in chains for perjury at his trial.

However, Cersei gives too much power to the Seven, leading to her own imprisonment for incest with her brother Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau).
This leads to one of the most memorable scenes in Game of Thrones, when Cersei has to walk through King’s Landing naked and pursued by cries of “shame”.
While Cersei deals with the Seven, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) has her own uprising with the Sons of the Harpy, a murderous group trying to stop her breaking up the slave trade.
She eventually gets the best of them by setting one of her dragons on them and then flying away until Drogon abandons her in Dothraki land.
Tyrion Lannister spends the season on the run from Cersei after he killed their father Tywin (Charles Dance).
