James Gandolfini’s son plays a young Tony Soprano as he’s seen for the first time on set for Saints of Newark – The Sun

MICHAEL Gandolfini transforms into a young Tony Soprano – originally portrayed by his late dad – in the hotly anticipated The Sopranos prequel.

The 19-year-old looked the image of his award-winning dad as he got into character on set of The Many Saints of Newark in New York.

The movie tells the tale of the formative years of New Jersey gangster Tony, portrayed by James Gandolfini in the original series.

James died from a heart attack in 2013.

For filming, Michael donned a flowing brunette wig, paired with a denim jacket and flares.

He was spotted climbing into a vintage car, and in another shot walking with a roll-up cigarette in hand.

The Walking Dead star Jon Bernthal, 42, is also starring in the movie, although his exact role is being kept tightly under wraps.

Jon channelled a 60s Mafia boss in a leather coat and high-waisted trousers, paired with slicked back locks.

The plot of the mob prequel is set in the era of the Newark riots in the 1960s, when African-Americans and Italians in New Jersey embroiled in an often fatal feud.

The Sopranos centred around mob boss Tony Soprano and his dealings with "his family" while also seeking treatment for panic attacks.

The hit show ran for six seasons from 1999 to 2007 and made a star of James, who won numerous awards including Golden Globes.

His performance as Tony Soprano is widely regarded as one of the greatest performances in television history.

He also starred in Quentin Tarantino's all-star True Romance, Jerry Bruckheimer's Crimson Tide and comedy Get Shorty.

In 2013, he suddenly died from a heart attack aged 51, leaving behind Michael, his second wife Deborah and their daughter, Liliana, who is now six.

Earlier this month, Michael spoke proudly of following in his dad's footsteps, saying: "It's exciting to step into the shoes of my dad. I'm real excited, it's going to be great."

Newark is set for release September 25, 2020.
