WhatsApp 'dark mode' is finally coming to Android phones

WhatsApp’s much-touted ‘dark mode’ looks set to arrive on Android phones as well as iPhones in the coming months.

The mode will switch your theme from the default light mode to a black theme that, it’s claimed, will put less strain on your eyes and save battery life.

Although the option for a dark mode has been previously spotted in the beta version of the WhatsApp iOS app, it’s now been seen in the Android equivalent.

That means if you use a phone made by the likes of Samsung, Huawei or OnePlus, you’ll have the option of swapping to dark mode.

As it’s spotted in the beta version, we don’t know exactly how long it will take to the full consumer version of the app. It could be within the next few months, so make sure you keep the app updated at all times to ensure you get the feature when it does roll out.

Facebook Messenger has already implemented its own dark mode, which can be accessed whether you use an Android or iOS phone.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Send just the ? emoji to anyone (or even yourself).
  • Tap on the moon emoji in the chat after you send it.
  • A pop up should appear saying you found dark mode.
  • Go to settings and you should see a toggle switch to engage it.

Metro tested this method out for ourselves and can confirm that it does work. After sending the moon emoji, you see a shower of crescent moons and we got the pop-up.

Apple has already embraced the idea with the release of iOS 12 and also on its computers when it was included with MacOS Mojave.

It might sound pointless, but it’s been claimed that turning windows dark makes for easier reading at night and could also help save battery life on your devices.
