Last year Buckingham left Fleetwood Mac after 43 years performing with the band. He said last year: “This was not something that was really my doing or my choice. I think what you would say is that there were factions within the band that had lost their perspective. What that did was to harm – and this is the only thing I’m really sad about, the rest of it becomes an opportunity – it harmed the 43-year legacy that we had worked so hard to build.”
Now it turns out that Buckingham left after a feud with his ex-lover and bandmate Steve Nicks reignited.
Mick Fleetwood told MOJO: “Support really could not be given to ask the situation to continue. It was too challenging.
“The truth is, call it what you want, a parting of company took place, and it had to take place, and it was supported by the remaining band members around something that for sure was a major problem to two people – Lindsey and Stevie.”
While Keyboardist Christine McVie revealed that Fleetwood Mac had to “make a choice.”
She said: “It was the only route we could take, because there was too much animosity between certain members of the band at that point.
“There was just no way it could’ve gone on as a five-piece, a group with Lindsey in the band.
“So it was either just completely break up the band or make the best of it.”
Back in February, Buckingham underwent emergency open heart surgery.
His wife Kristen told her Twitter followers that he felt “fortunate to be alive.”
Meanwhile, Fleetwood Mac continue to tour without their ex-band member.
Both Mike Campbell and Neil Finn have replaced the guitarist.
