The finalists – James Jordan, Wes Nelson and Saara Aalto – performed in the opening number but didn’t get a chance to show off their solo skills before voting started.
Kicking off the show, Holly Willoughby revealed: "The grand finale is all about you. Your votes alone decides who picks up that trophy."
Those watching at home were not impressed with the decision though and questioned if it was fair.
One person asked: “Wondering why they opened the voting before anyone had even stepped on the ice?? #DancingOnIce.”
A second wrote: “@dancingonice dont understand how voting can open before we see them dance.i thought it was vote for best dancer. Not seen them yet!! #confused #DancingonIce #DancingOnIceFinal.”
While a third commented: “How can you have voting before they dance. This makes a mockery of it. It makes it a popularity contest not a ice skating contest. #DancingonIce.”
Former Strictly Come Dancing pro James Jordan, Love Islander Wes Nelson and X Factor singer Saara Aalto are battling it out this evening to be win the show.
James, 40 was forced to miss a crucial rehearsal ahead of the final after injuring his shoulder.
He suffered a subluxed shoulder (partial dislocation) in rehearsals yesterday when he fell on his arm.
He wasn’t the only one injured – rival Wes Nelson “popped a bone in his wrist” while training with partner Vanessa Bauer.
The dramatic final, hosted by Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield, saw former contestants return including Gemma Collins.
The Towie star sparked headlines early on in the ITV series by falling on the ice in dramatic fashion and rowing with judge Jason Gardiner.
