The German conceded a penalty by needlessly barging into Harry Kane's back following a Tottenham free-kick.
The spot-kick award sparked a debate as Kane seemed to be in an offside position while Mustafi committed the foul.
But Arsenal fans slammed the 26-year-old defender – who played right-back on Saturday – for the mistake as his shove on the Spurs captain seemed unnecessary with Laurent Koscielny appearing in control of the situation.
And Petit – who won the Double in 1998 with Arsenal – has joined in the criticism of the German.
He said: "I was surprised to see him start. He is the king of blunders."
Mustafi is notorious among Arsenal fans for his defensive errors which have marred his three-year spell at the Emirates.
One even created a Twitter thread listing all of his high-profile blunders featuring 17 clips – although not all of them resulted in a goal.
Last year his mistake allowed Sergio Aguero to open the scoring in the Carabao Cup final, which City eventually won 3-0.
In the 18th minute of the game, the Argentine bumped into Mustafi as he was eyeing a long ball from Claudio Bravo and the centre-back stayed put crying foul instead of chasing him – giving the striker a clear path to the goal.
SHKODRAN MUSTAFI'S BLUNDER LIST
- 02/03/2019 – TOTTENHAM 1-1 ARSENAL – a penalty conceded after a shove on Harry Kane
- 12/29/2018 – LIVERPOOL 5-1 ARSENAL – a trip following Roberto Firmino's dribbling
- 25/02/2018 – ARSENAL 0-3 MANCHESTER CITY – giving Sergio Aguero a clear path to the goal after getting a nudge from the Argentine
- 02/12/2017 – ARSENAL 1-3 MANCHESTER UNITED – losing the ball in front of Arsenal's penalty box to Jesse Lingard
Meanwhile, in last season's 3-1 defeat to Manchester United he lost the ball to Jesse Lingard while attempting to start a play from the back, with the United winger then sending it past Petr Cech thanks to a precise pass from Romelu Lukaku.
And this year Mustafi looked extremely shaky in the 5-1 thumping at Anfield, with Roberto Firmino's dribbling leaving him laying on the ground and watching the ball hitting the back of the net.
Confusingly, statisticians Opta say that Mustafi has made no errors leading to goals this season.
Which will perplex Gunners fans even more.
