On the heels of her Golden Globe and Grammy wins — and just days before the Oscars, where she’s nominated for Best Actress — Lady Gaga split from Carino, her agent boyfriend turned fiancé of two years.
“Their friends knew they weren’t going to work out in the long run,” a source close to Carino told PEOPLE. “It always seemed Christian was more into the relationship than Gaga was.”
It came at an interesting time, too: as the singer recounted in her 2017 documentary, Gaga: Five Foot Two, it seems that when she has major career success, her love life suffers. “It’s like a turnover,” she lamented. “My love life has just imploded.”
Here, a look back at what she means.
Gaga was previously engaged to Chicago Fire star Kinney; they were together for five years. But shortly after she landed her role in A Star Is Born in 2016, the couple split.
“Me and Taylor are fighting, so that sucks,” she said in the opening scene of Gaga: Five Foot Two. “My threshold for bulls— with men is just — I don’t have one anymore. In relationships, you have to move together.”
After they split in the film, the singer broke down in tears as she alluded to the fact that her growing career might have contributed to the breakup.
“I did a movie and lose Taylor,” she added. “This is the third time I’ve had my heart broken like this.”
The singer dated producer Williams from 2009 to 2010; but as she noted in the documentary, “I sold 10 million [records] and lost Matt.”
Gaga dated Carl in 2005 and briefly reunited with him in 2010. He was also reportedly the inspiration for her hit song, “Yoü and I.” But as she shared in Gaga: Five Foot Two, “I sold 30 million [albums] and lost Lüc.”
