The Brits haven’t even started yet but tonight’s host Jack Whitehall has already given ITV bosses a headache.
Earlier today, the comic swore during a breakfast show slot promoting the bash.
Jack, fronting for a second year, was cracking jokes to Christine Bleakly about how “p***ed” her pals Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield were last year.
“Everyone’s p***ed,” he said. “Rock stars, the Foo Fighters that you expect to be rowdy. But still it was Schofield and Willoughby that were most drunk, behaving more outrageously than any of the rock stars.”
Later, after apologies, he said: “OK, ‘p***ed’ is not a word you’re allowed to say on breakfast television. Who knew?”
It’s not quite up there with Kanye West ’s 2015 appearance at the Brits, where his barrage of bad language prompted overstretched ITV censors to pull the plug on the sound for the majority of his performance. The broadcast has a 20-second delay for such occurrences.
Meanwhile, Jack is concerned he’ll suffer “second album syndrome” tomorrow night.
“It can only be disappointment the following year,” he says. “Don’t go back to a gig you’ve nailed and don’t try and replicate it.
“Last year, people quite liked me throwing a little bit of shade but you don’t want to be too punchy – you want everyone to have an enjoyable night.”
He jokingly apologised for telling Rag’n’Bone Man he “had a beard like a wizard”, now saying it’s “like a Victorian butcher”.
Ah well, the Brits – on ITV tomorrow night at 8pm – just wouldn’t be the Brits without some controversy…
