For Natasha Kingsley (grown-ish‘s Yara Shahidi), love is the stuff of 1990s rom-coms. It’s not something that’s practical or even desired in her present reality. But with The Sun Is Also a Star trailer, a sneak peek at the film adaptation of Nicola Yoon’s book, romance makes a comeback.
“What if I told you I could get you to fall in love with me? … Just give me a day.” This is the challenge poet Daniel Bae (Riverdale‘s Charles Melton) gives to Natasha, sparking their 24-hour love story set against New York City.
As Daniel says, they already have the “X factor” needed for a love connection, but fate threatens to pull them apart. While he’s college bound, the Jamaican-born Natasha and her family are fighting against deportation from the United States.
“It’s what we’re witnessing right now,” Shahidi told PEOPLE of the plot. “We’ve also witnessed on a regular basis that there has never been a moment in which people of immigrant families have had the peace of mind that where they’re going they’re able to call home. And because of that, it was really important that this storyline was made so serious and taken as seriously as the love story itself. It is not peripheral to the storyline.”
Warner Bros. will release The Sun Is Also a Star on May 17, following the studio’s 2017 debut of Everything, Everything, another film based on a Yoon book.
Girls Trip writer Tracy Oliver, who’s also working on that television reboot of First Wives Club, penned the screenplay.
